The latest version 7.1.6 was published July 2010. To check which version you are using, open WinEcon - the version number is displayed in the bottom right corner of the start up page. Click the 'Licence' button on the start up page of WinEcon to view further details about your licence. Please contact WinEcon Enquiries at at enquiries@winecon.com  if you need to upgrade.

I get the error message "Your sampler licence has elapsed"

WinEcon installs in sampler mode and can be use in this mode for 7 days. After this time the software will need to be licensed. The software can be licensed at any time after the 7 day sampler licence has elapsed and will be re-activated according to the licence applied

I get the error message "The current licence for this software has elapsed"

The networked versions of the WinEcon software are sold on an annually renewable site licence basis. If the licence has not been renewed the software will 'time out'.

The administrator for the institution or the staff contact for the licence should contact renewals@winecon.com  to renew the software licence.

If you are a student and have purchased the specially priced WinEcon Student Pack the licence is only valid for one year. If you wish to use your software for longer then you would need to buy a further one year licence or buy a full price single user perpetual licence. For further details see WinEcon Student Pack.

On installing I get a message saying a file in 'System32' could not be updated while windows was active, and offering to update the file during a reboot.

This problem affects many Windows applications and is caused by security software. Reboot to resolve the problem.

When using the interactive questions in MathEcon I keep getting the message that Internet Explorer is restricting active content.

This is due to increased default security settings in Internet Explorer. To stop these messages when using MathEcon please follow the instructions below.

1. Choose "Internet Options..." from the "Tools" menu in Internet Explorer

2. Click the "Advanced" tab

3. Scroll down to the Security section and check/tick "Allow active
content to run in files on My Computer"

4. Click "OK"

I get "Initialization failed. Not enough memory or the file is damaged" error message in WinEcon

Please ensure that you are using the latest version of the software or contact help@winecon.com  to ask for assistance.

I get "C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-Dos and Microsoft Windows Applications." On closing window I get "Cannot find TB85NET.exe (or one of its components)".

According to the Microsoft website, this problem arises when there is a missing file on your Windows XP installation. This problem affects many established Windows applications, not just WinEcon.

To fix the problem you will need to insert your Windows XP CD-ROM and follow the instructions at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

If you do not have your Windows XP CD-ROM the required files may already be located on your hard disk and found automatically without needing the CD.

I get a "leavePage error" or "enterPage" error in WinEcon

These can appear after another error has occurred and are an indirect result of the previous error. Resolving the first error reported will make this warning go away. You will need to exit WinEcon and restart it to make this message go away; you do not usually need to reset your machine.

Only one user can log on to WinEcon at once even though it is installed on the network

This is usually due to the econdata.tbk file not being set to read-only by the network administrator. This problem also arises if WinEcon Lecturer is opened while students are using the system.

The colours look strange and the pictures are covered with dots

WinEcon was designed to run in 256 colours or above. However, old PCs or new PCs co-existing on networks with old PCs may well only support 16 colours. WinEcon is usable in 16 colours but screen clarity will not be as good and some details may be hard to spot.

Many non-technical/busy users often leave their machine in the display mode it was supplied to them in and this may be just 16 colours even though more are supported by their hardware. Check the documentation for your graphics adapter or your machine to learn more about display colours or ask your network administrator if the display settings can be changed for the network.

The WinEcon window seems a bit small

WinEcon was designed to run at a resolution of 640x480 pixels (i.e. VGA size). When WinEcon is run at higher display resolutions the window remains at 640x480 and does not scale up to fill the screen. This is a generic problem with programs that use bitmaps. A workaround is to switch your display down to 640x480 or 800x600 while using WinEcon.

Text does not appear to fit in its allotted space on screen and words are missing

WinEcon, like many Windows programs, is not compatible with Large Font display drivers (or any other display driver which does not support the Windows standard of a logical 96 DPI). The solution is to switch Windows back to a Small Font display driver from Window Control Panel using the Display Settings.

WinEcon runs slowly on a diskless workstation

If installing WinEcon onto a network it is recommended that the installed directory be mirrored onto the local hard drive (if one exists) of each client machine for optimal performance. Many systems enable this to be performed automatically when the client machines power on, with the whole drive or directory being copied across if not already present. Subsequently, files will only be copied again if users remove or alter the mirrored copy.
