WinEcon Download and Installation Instructions for SchoolsThe latest version is 7.1.4 published 16th July 2009 Follow the instructions below to download and install WinEcon Economics for Schools. If you already have WinEcon installed you will need to uninstall WinEcon before re-installing WinEcon (see Uninstalling WinEcon section at the bottom of this page for further information). If you are using RM networking software you may need additional support - please see the Getting Help section at the bottom of this page for further information. Step 1 - Downloading the softwareDownload this file, winecon716.exe (27.9MB), to a temporary location on your hard disk. If the browser asks whether to Save or to Open or Run the file, choose Save and pick a folder to save the file into. Step 2 - Installing the softwareIf you are installing WinEcon to a securely configured Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista/7 machine then you will now need to log in as Administrator before attempting to install WinEcon. Once the download is complete, click Open or use "Windows Explorer" or "My Computer" to locate the winecon716.exe file that you downloaded in step 1. Note that on many Windows systems, the ".exe" part of the file name will not be shown - so the file will appear to be called just "winecon716" and not "winecon716.exe". Double-click on the winecon716.exe file to start the WinEcon installation program. Then follow the on-screen instructions. Click "Next" unless you wish to change the default settings. Click "Finish" Step 3 - Run your WinEcon softwareYou can now start WinEcon by double clicking on the WinEcon icon or by using the Windows start menu (Start | Programs | WinEcon 7.1) WinEcon will start up in sampler mode. Step 4 - Select the course 'Economics for Schools'You can now start using WinEcon in sampler mode. Once you have entered your licence code for WinEcon Economics for Schools, only this course will be displayed. Entering your licence codeIf you have purchased a WinEcon site licence you will have been emailed a licence code. Your licence code should appear in the email as a single line. Although your email program may have inserted a line break you will need to enter it into WinEcon as a single line. Enter the licence code into WinEcon as follows: WinEcon should now show your current licence details. You can view these at any time by clicking on the Licence button. Click on the navigation back arrow to close the pop-up window. Networking the softwareWinEcon does not actually run on the server - the software runs on the client as a Windows application. As a client-side application, WinEcon needs to be in the filespace of each client workstation - either on a network mapped drive (not a UNC share) or physically on the local hard disk. If you do not require web linking then you can simply install WinEcon onto a network mapped drive and manually add a Windows shortcut to the installed winecon.exe file in the Windows start menu or Desktop. We do not recommend this approach because it means that students will not be able to link to WinEcon from web pages. Our recommended approach is to install WinEcon on each client workstation. This will enable linking to WinEcon from web pages by creating a file association between the ".winecon" file extension and the "winecon.exe" executable on each workstation. The brute force way to achieve this is to manually install the software on each workstation one by one. However, for larger numbers of workstations, the normal way to do this is to install WinEcon onto a single workstation, capturing the registry changes that are made during the install (i.e. setting up the .winecon file association) using the ghosting software. This image of the installed copy of WinEcon can then be replicated around the clients using ghosting software automatically. If this does not solve your problem then please email help@winecon.com with a description of the problem and any helpful information you are able to give (particularly which version of Windows you are using). If you are using RM networking software you may need to change some of the default settings. If, having installed WinEcon, you experience problems when students try to run the software, please contact help@winecon.com for advice. Uninstalling WinEconIf you are currently using an old customised version, please contact help@winecon.com first. If you were logged in as Administrator when you installed WinEcon then you will probably need to be logged in as Administrator in order to be allowed to remove WinEcon. WinEcon 6.1 or previous version of WinEcon 7.1 can be removed from your computing using the "Add/Remove Programs" or "Programs and Features" link in Windows Control Panel. - Click Start When the ReadOnly File Detected pop-up displays, tick the ‘Don’t display this message again’ box and click the 'Yes' button to remove all WinEcon read only files. |
